FOUR PLAYERS THAT OUTSHONE IN FRENCH OPEN 2017

The French Open or Ronald Garros concluded on an aggressive note in Paris. In the absence of top players such as Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Roger Federer, each player tried to seize the opportunity to prevail in the prestigious tournament.

While there were many contenders for the grand slam, here were the top four players who outshone in the tournament

 

1. Andy Murray:

After a series of unfortunate injuries like shingles and elbow injury lately, the world number one Andy Murray entered the tournament with all his motivation and strength assembled. This three-time grand slam and two-time Olympics winner showed mastery in groundstrokes and backhand shots. His expeditious ability to transform his game style from defensive to offensive made him one of the toughest opposition to play against. Although he couldn’t make it to the finals, but Murray was one of the players who showed his brilliance and class in the tournament.

 

2. Eugenie Bouchard :

After a glorifying season in 2014, where she was named the WTA’s most improved player, the Canadian professional constantly failed to capitalize on her winning form. But, she recently caught many eyes by defeating Maria beating Maria Sharapova and world number one Angelique Kerber on Madrid Clay. At Roland Garros, although she couldn’t earn spurs, she showed glimpses of her abilities to shine at the game

 

3. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova :

This 25-year-old Russian came as one of the hottest contenders of the grand slam. Having reached the quarterfinals in all her previous four Grand Slams, she has built an admirable résumé. At French Open, she, partnering with D. Gavrilova, showed real threat with her blistering speed and defensive skills. Her expertise in powerful serves and aggressive returns was nightmarish for the opponents. She seemed to be as one of the emerging players at Roland Garros.

 

4. Elina Svitolina :

The World no. 6 Ukrainian has played the best tennis this year. She has won four prestigious tournaments which includes Taiwan Open, İstanbul Cup, Dubai Tennis Championships, and Italian Open. Popularly known for her consistent groundstrokes and powerful backhand, she started strong at French open but her winning streak came to halt in the quarter finals where she was defeated by S. Halep. Although she couldn’t win the grand slam, she showed potential of winning them in future.
