A long wait of award recognition ended for Roger Deakins, who, after 14 previous nominations over the career span of 40 years, won the Academy Award for his cinematography for Blade Runner 2049. Deakin’s first nomination was for The Shawshank Redemption, and since then, the award had been a long due after having worked on projects such as Fargo, Skyfall, No Country for Old Men, etc. Just like how DiCaprio won for The Revenant after a long wait, Deakins’ victory was surely the highlight of the show.

2. MeToo :

This year’s Oscar, unlike any other, was different from activism and social politics point of view. The famous #MeToo campaign was highlighted by Ashely Judd, Salma Hayek and Annabella Sciorra, all of whom had gone public with allegations about sexual harassment at the hands of Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein.

3. Netflix won its first award :

Netflix film, ‘Icarus’, which is about Russian doping at the Olympics, won its first Oscars for a feature film ever since they came into effect, although it has won last year’s award for best documentary short for White Helmets. This indeed is a highlighting point of the Oscars as it demonstrates the impact Netflix is having or promises to have.
